BATTLECRY LIVE
FROM NEW ORLEANS!!!
April 10-13, 2008 we were in New Orleans helping to change the story of women forever.

April 26, 2008
Ever since the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina broke the collective heart of this nation, I had been aching for a way to get to New Orleans to somehow begin to do my part. I was like: "Should I quit my job? Hitchhike from California to New Orleans? Join Habitat for Humanity? I have got to do something to help with healing and recovery! What can I - what should I do?" I, like many other helpless Americans, finally came to terms with the fact that I was just not in a position to assist at that point in life. I tucked New Orleans away as a secret in my heart.
Late 2007, when BATTLECRY signed on to co-produce our San Diego production of The Vagina Monologues - I heard faint whispers on the Vday website that Eve Ensler was slated to celebrate her 10th Anniversary (V10) in New Orleans and the Gulf South to shine her yearly Spotlight Focus on this beleagured region. I jumped on it as fast as I could, determined to make sending a San Diego delegation to "Superlove at the Superdome" if it was the last thing I did. "New Orleans needs to be a production priority," I kept chanting to my cast and crew even as we were preoccupied with so many other local concerns trying to make our important community production a success.
Soon windows and doors of opportunity and support started to open as individual donations and encore performance fundraisers started adding up, Vday authorized covering some travel expenses and assigned a national coordinator to facilitate travel (Thank you Heather Moseley), private donors sent money to us from across the country, and the hearts of our cast opened wider and wider to making the sacrifices to make the trip. Finally Vday sent out a request to all community organizers to assign one person in their group to coordinate travel - they said they needed a "V10 Superlove Sister". I heard my name, and I answered the call.
So, this experience, surrounded by an 8-woman delegation of SD VAGIMONS2008 PIONEERS, PRODUCERS, AND VOLUNTEERS is very personal to this Superlove Sister. Each of us has distributed a "delegate report" amongst ourselves to scrapbook and keep this life-changing memoir dear to our hearts forever. Before we headed to NOLA, I made a To-Do List - and I got to do everything I set out to do...We celebrated victory over violence, valentines, vaginas, and everything else with katrina survivors, thousands of amazing women from all over the world, and big celebs! I want to share here my TOP 6! as another step towards making sure I don't leave all that I gained, learned, and superloved in New Orleans behind. Click on my link below...

"And who had any idea that waking up at the crack of dawn to go to a very spontaneous Saturday morning march from Congo Square would change my life forever. So many outrageous moments happened. In sum, I felt the presence of my ancestors and my descendants as I plugged into the past, present, and future. All weekend, Eve and all of the participants from the most famous to the most incognito – were completely accessible, in the Activist Lounge and elsewhere. There was no distance or pretense, we got pictures with so many because we were all leveled by one common denominator: wanting to make a difference in the anti-violence movement. We marched right with Eve and all of the others who spoke to us from stage (I have the video footage to prove it) and on that small New Orleans street first thing in the morning, I felt like I was marching with Martin Luther King on Washington. We danced, and cheered, and cried some more with onlookers, reporters, police escorts, and marching bands urging us on. I belong in the streets - activating – I remain open to discovering the crusade I am destined to lead."

We are thrilled to announce that this year we have united forces with VDAY: a global effort to end violence against women and girls. For a decade now, as artists and activists, VDAY has raised millions of dollars in funds, as well as immeasurable awareness for the cause - and has pledged to keep doing so "until the violence stops".
April 10-13, 2008, BATTLECRY will celebrate VDAY's 10th Anniversary by leading a delegation from San Diego, CA to New Orleans, LA to uplift and honor survivors of Hurricane Katrina! Any monetary contribution you can make would help us go a very long way.
